Few companies organize to walk multiple paths to re-invent themselves.
Note : if you have a strange feeling of "Deja Vu", or "Synchronicity" it is absolutely normal, and you are fine. Innovation is partly in this rapid prototyping and entanglement experience between different stories and dimensions. It is innovating on innovation illustration.
Few companies set up the environment for individuals to do the same.
I interviewed a guy who experienced 18 laps race event into the innovation pool into the same company.
Some kind of initiatic workout for innovation talent development.
This story is 100% facts based. It describes more in details one specific lap. This is Lap 13.
The story describes several initiatives that have happened around the globe and more generally a reflexion on the innovation rise. Roles of sponsors and rewards schemes. Races in solos or in teams towards 1 same goal: nurturing new ideas with the inevitable hope of creating a new tomorrow.
We are talking a 20 years period. Laps are not chronologic. Lap 13 is taken every year by storm.
The company where the "pool" hosted this weird swimming workout has grown from 5 to 50 thousands employees in the time. Regional to global status. Although this organization is considered innovative, no official program has been set up for such long distance and multi experience dive.
The flash interview has been inspired by the Mix Challenge.
Real field experience is analyzed as a stand-alone testimony among a chain of 18 stories. However, smart readers will also find out a series of related hacks.
Abundant food for thoughts.
A recurrent quote is that the core trade basics require "5 years to learn how to float".
With few written materials in a time preceeding ISO certification programs, coulpled with a fast expanding company and individuals scopes, the guy interviewed rapidly understood that problems will come up quickly without any troubleshooting guide.
This was not about firefighting. Young recruits were feeling like scouting on a "Terra Incognita". Draft maps provided not representing the territory.
Many would prefer "18 holes" for a title and the story could lead through a nice golf course. Especially our Mix Guru.
Appealing outdoor demanding exercise.Concentration and precision skills development drive. Diversity in the landscape. Time for mind simulation and computation.
Sorry, the journey sounds quite more repetitive, breath-taking but for no gorgeous scenery. Against the clock. And bouncing back on a wall.
Our recruit is describing his professional experience as a swimming workout.
Here is the number 13 out of the 18 Questions & Answers giving details of the experience :
13. How do sponsors make innovation an important component in compensation and reward decisions?
Freestyle John Linchpin:
Hmm...are you asking if we’ve golden stones recognition technology? Before talking precious stones, firstly, I’d like to mention that we have been practicing a medley of swimming strokes, all sponsored by international top-level coaches as well as local masters.
The ground principle is that any athlete can freely jump-in to participate to different sporting events, these can be group-wise or solo-wise, with unique performance awards allocated for each swim stroke technique.

First, I’d like to mention that we have a medley of swimming strokes, sponsored by international top-level coaches as well as local masters. Swimmers can enter tthe " Tropical Eyes Hurricane" wave rides, or to the Innovation "Enginnovation" awards race in teams, they choose to be rewarded as Innovative person or team of the year.
The last one is a freshly added challenge which arose earlier this year in the land of smiles. The idea behind it: support furthermore innovation, acknowledge special contributions of a team member in developing our innovation and providing meaningful ideas. The innovation swimmer of the year is nominated by the coach after having demonstrated consistent effort in supporting our innovation process through various workouts: authoring innovation cards, empowering others by facilitating creative strokes sessions - note, that’s also a good way to get your swimmates along - or by being an effective contributor to these.
It’s definitely not an easy thing for a trained swimmer to win the medals. Even more when we talk about new joiners. Is gold the main focus though? If you ask me, I see starlight more as a message from coaches believing in their athletes - than to be a winner-buzz event. It might surprise you somehow, but I would like to add, that, though recognition is something definitely important, what arises from the open water pool is kind of drawn from the unexpected and mysteriously unpredictable.

In that way, even if awards are stimulating and driving our swimmer’s mind through swimming goggles, it’s definitely not going to be a guru-attitude for us. In fact, rewards or comps are only one of the existing wetsuits to reveal mind illuminations and thrive breakthrough innovations.
I actually like to think that the ripple’s kinetic energy not only comes from a rewards perspective. Then ...where from ? Tight times ? Aha!...yes for sure. It comes first from top coaches support, as I just mentioned. Critical. Think about storytelling too. How good does it do to Innovation, and insufflate some additional energy, beyond traditional rewards? Most certainly, unleashing the mind power is in the MiX of all ...
Team participations and challenges to the race is definitely encouraging overall contributions levels, should it be in terms of numbers of swimmers participating, diversity of movements or quality of the strokes.
Recent exemple: 64 best practices submitted to a grand award competition sponsored by a top coach, in no less than 5 swimming categories.
Result : 25 winning teams with remarquables examples of international and cross-department co-creation power
Not only individual creative endeavours, it is also teamwork and passion for success that will help thrive innovation.
Visible support from sponsors and coaches.
Recognizing proposals and trials that are a fertile ground for surprising minds and making connections.
