Why not a BOOK? a FREE BOOK!

By Stephen Remedios on February 8, 2013

There's a great amount of content here to make a world class FREE e-book (or charge 10c and give it to charity) Almost like the best of the MiX for the year. While all of the content is available online, putting this on bookshelves will make it larger than life. With the intellectual capital that you have on this group and the diversity and detail of some of the hacks and stories I'm sure the book would be a bestseller - kind of like a non-fiction collection of essays from practitioners. I think this is a great idea because it does two things: 1. It mainstreams all the great ideas in the MiX at a low cost (Free / Close to Free Book) 2. It makes the MiX far more visible and accessible to a greater number of people who maybe don't read online but read books!

What if we talk with the people at Moleskine in order to print the book for us? I know… Moleskine makes notebooks, but they also encourage its fan base to hack (http://mymoleskine.moleskine.com/community/mymoleskine_hacks.php) their products, and their notebooks are way so cool!

What I’m thinking here is to produce our very first MIX book that could also have blank pages so that disrupters from all parts of the world can also use our book as their own tactical notebook for hacking management. I picture bold innovators attending business meetings with their books under their arms ready to speak up and implement new hacks for rusty corporations; That or getting fired because of their heresy ;)

Hi Stephen, we think this is a great idea and something we're definitely considering for the year. In addition to the two benefits you mentioned, I'd add a third--it gives those who contribute to the MIX an additional opportunity for recognition (and hopefully impact, in their orgs and outside).

thanks!

Michele

If we can keep it reasonable size, I could volunteer to take content organize, layout & format it into an ibook / ebook.

Sourcing content (picking which stories, etc.) Marketing, distribution, etc. would have to come from MIX or others.

e.g. 60 "pages" = 8-10 stories x 6pages/1K-2K words each -- perhaps the finalists of a mixathon

The goal I'd support would be shorter work that more people will read.

Thanks Michele... sure recognition is a great reward! I somehow get the sense that the majority of the people on the MIX are in it for the sharing and democratization of ideas and world class examples, which is a great thing. If the profits from the book go to a non-profit or worthy cause that will be even better. I'm increasingly a believer in doing well by doing good, and doing good comes first... ALWAYS.

I'm looking forward to the book!

Steve

I like this! Does anyone have any data on the reaction/use of the Communities of Passion summary? This may be some interesting input to implementing the above.

One qualitative datapoint: I have one client (who was not involved in the communities of passion hackathon) but who loves the COP hackathon report and has used it as a model for how she'd like to see her own organization thinking about building community.
