Community-Driven In-Person Events and Meetups

By MIX Team on February 5, 2013

One of the pieces of feedback we got after the MIX Mashup in 2012 was about creating more opportunities for MIXers to meet other management innovators more often. Perhaps the MIX could support community members to schedule their own meetups, providing materials, ideas, and speakers to make these events successful. A great inspiration for this is the strategy behind the TEDx events.

Would love to coordinate some thing local to the SFO area, and I would love to see the Mashup I missed happen again.

I would like to see some interactive conferences rather than more talking heads. We can get videos of the talking heads and it would be nice not to see a few people on stage and the rest in the audience. We have a lot of unsung "mavericks" in our midst.

Totally agree, Susan! Thanks for your input

perhaps we can spend a few hours (or even a half day) at the next Mashup breaking out into a series of mini hackathons on subjects that the Mashup community agrees they want to tackle together ahead of time. Each breakout would have a facilitator, a pre-defined problem, then the group would get to work together to come up with some great solutions and a set of next steps to pursue post Mashup.

We should even consider using Susan's Annenberg school model from her M-Prize finalist entry as inspiration:

At the MIX mashup David Kelly commented that there are some things that can not be done virtually. Meeting together physically from time to time would be fantastic to help build the community.

Check out what the STOOS Network is doing around STOOS satellites. STOOS is by the way an umbrella initiaitive trying to connect the many management innovation "guerilla groups" around the world. They are found on Linkedin.

TEDx is a good model; leverages and strengthens the TED brand, but doesn't require a whole lot of centralized planning on your part (Michele, Gary, Polly, Chris, et al).

I think a more interactive MiX Mashup is a very good idea--but I also think that it's hard to get a good crowd out to an event if people don't believe that they are going to hear from "expert speakers". I think that if you publicized an event without any "speakers", it'd be hard to convince people to invest their time; seems to be a little too much risk. So maybe the right way of approaching this is using Chris' idea?

I would really value the opportunity to participate in a local MIX community. Anyone who sees this and is located in Scotland, add a comment if you would also value this.

I Oslo, Norway - we aim to bring the Stoos and MIX followers together at our monthly TEDxOslo Salon. This takes some planning, and so far we have only had one Salon. But my goal is to engage these people to attend end get to know each other - then maybe we can have a Open Space sessions in the hours after Salon. It's worth a try!
