Meaning, Connection, & Collaboration—Creating Value in the Social Era

A Maverick Hangout with Nilofer Merchant, author of The New How and Creating Value in the Social Era, on leading, innovating, and creating value in the social era.

January 23, 2014, 11am ET

The mega challenge behind so many of the major challenges leaders face in the transition from the industrial to the innovation era is ultimately one of transcending tradeoffs. How do we make profit and purpose, scale and humanity, competition and community, focus and collaboration, discipline and creativity, power and generosity, individual and institution, “both/and’s” rather than “either/or’s?”

Nilofer Merchant has been applying her capacious mind, bold spirit, and real-world experience to those challenges for two decades. In her two books, The New How: Creating Business Solutions Through Collaborative Strategy and Creating Value in the #SocialEra she offers up a radical reimagining of what it means to lead, innovate, and create genuine value today.

In our Maverick Hangout on Thursday, January 23, 2014 (11am ET), Nilofer will share her powerful point of view about the Social Era—what is it exactly, how do individuals and organizations alike embrace it and thrive in it? We’ll unpack a set of profound insights and share the most progressive stories around creating value the Social Era, including:

  • The power of connections
  • The nature of power
  • The shift from control to collaboration
  • ”Onlyness” as the key to success
  • Strategies for unlocking, amplifying, and rewarding contribution from all quarters
  • Creating trust
  • Building in adaptability and flexibility
  • Moving from closed to open
  • Cultivating a genuine sense of purpose

Participating in the Hangout is as easy as coming back to this link on Thursday, January 23 at 11am ET. Nilofer will be answering your questions, so please post them in advance in the comments section here (and via Twitter during the Hangout #MIXhangout).

And if you’re inspired by the themes of the Hangout, please share your own story or bold idea in the Unlimited Human Potential Challenge. Learn more here.

Great Hangout with Nilofer. I hope the technical difficulties weren't TOO distracting as Nilofer shared so many deep and deeply practical insights. We're going to clean up the videos and post here shortly. Please let me know if you have any questions! Thank you all.

The issue is the great opportunity available to create great and sustainable companies through shared purpose and empowerment of people. The barrier as always is a resistance to change that tends to increase as we move up the organization hierarchy. I like the amount of time Nilofer allocates to the category of leadership and strategy. Here we will find the keys to unlocking the true potential of the people in our companies and accelerating change. Thanks for an interesting session. Please fix the tech issues for the next one.

Screen is frozen. Is that just at my end? Thanks.

Starting on time is much better than a screen saying "starting soon".

I was attracted by Meaning in the headline but dont see it explicitly in the description. What is meaning in this content?

When people within an organisation are jaundiced (often understandably so), where or how do you start the shift to creating a more connected, collaborative, trust-worthy organisation?

How to keep the collaboration focussed? (not letting the main idea / ideation get over taken?
